The authors, Arroyo and Podetti – together with distinguished collaborators – share a complimentary vision on this topic. Having participated on the Antarctic campaign in the Brazilian base ‘Comandante Ferraz’, Arroyo’s priceless experience on Logistics provides an insight much different than the local one.

Like the rest of the publications, the research is divided into four parts: History, Industry, Politics and Future. The first three refer to the most relevant aspects of this activity in the last 70 years (1950 – 2020), with an emphasis on the most recent ones.

The last part takes the bases of the other three and goes over a series of proposals and future impactful projections for the next three decades, therefore completing the century suggested on the thesis.

In ‘History’, there will be a short analysis of the past of Argentina and Antarctica together with a detailed timeline that will identify the most important milestones and key future dates.

The chapter on Industry is thoroughly related to the Argentine Antarctic logistics and analyzes the contributions from shipyards and naval workshops until today. There will be a focus on the two major national Antarctic shipbuilding projects: the construction of the polar vessel ARA Bahía Paraíso in Príncipe, Menghi & Penco shipyards in the 1980s; and the modernization of the icebreaker ARA Almirante Irizar in TANDANOR, a few years back.

When talking about Politics related to the Antarctic logistics, the authors provide a polar benchmarking work that studies the strategies of the most active and logistically successful countries both in Antarctica and the Arctic. On the same section, the main guidelines to the national Antarctic politics will be analyzed, especially regarding logistics and making comparisons to other countries.

Finally, in the chapter on the ‘Future’ the prospective development of this peculiar form of logistics and its impact on the Argentine maritime industry will be mapped out. There will be a discussion as well as conceptual designs and industrial solutions towards the development of a new national polar vessel as a result of the outlined strategy. There is an interesting analysis on the potential impact on this activity regarding a more sustainable reconversion of the economy of the Tierra del Fuego region and Ushuaia in particular.

The volume will include a forecast on the economic, social and environmental impacts following the PIUBAD vector model. Finally, the authors will contemplate new opportunities and different adaptation strategies for the future of this activity.

Alejandro Arroyo

He graduated from Business and Shipping Economics from the Merchant Marine University of Buenos Aires and made numerous postgraduate studies abroad, gaining the following distinctions:

  • Doctor in Project Management – Faculty of Engineering & Construction Economics at RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia (2009)
  • MBA Marine Resource Management – Faculty of Fisheries & Marine Environment at Australian Maritime College, Launceston, Australia (2007)
  • MSC Maritime Economics and Operations – World Maritime University (IMO – UN), Malmoe, Sweden (1986)
  • Master on International Economic Politics – Universidad de Belgrano, Argentina (1984)

He worked for the American shipowner Delta Line, the Norwegian ship broker SAMTRANS, the Israeli rigger ZIM and the Canadian consulting agency Southmark that specializes on Project Operations across Latin America & the Caribbean, Africa & Asia – Mining / Oil & Gas / Power / Alternative Energies / Transportation / Infrastructure.

He is currently CEO of Southmark Logistics in Argentina and Postgraduate Director at ITBA in two logistics programs.

To this vast experience, he adds multiple publications and his own personal experience in the Antarctic logistics of the Brazilian base ‘Comandante Ferraz’.
